Rome, CT, Genoa

We are arriving 27/8/11 a.m. in Rome, I heard there was a special tour of the Colo. below ground. We will leave Rome on 31/8/11 for CT train?. Leaving CT for Genoa on 2/9/11. Would we have time to go to Pompei. What's a good itinerary for Rome. Grazie!

Cindi:
Most of what you need to know is either on the web or in a Rick Steves' guidebook. If you are leaving in 4 days, I would hope you have a good guidebook to consult. You need to plan around closures, and some pre-booking is necessary for museums as well as the Colosseum underground tour. You can save time and money by doing some planning. No one can do it all for you. (Well they can, but they charge by the hour!) Here are a couple of items from this very website that may help you. http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinations/italy/rome3.htm http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinations/italy/cinqueterre_fiatfree.htm Also take a look at http://www/roninrome.com for some great reference material. For more, click (above) on "Plan Your Trip" then "Italy." But buy that guidebook and read it before you arrive in Italy!

Thank you. Yes I bought the Rick Steves Italy 2011. And Europe Through The Back door. I'm sorry, I guess I just don't get the trains, etc. I've tried the German site he recommended and have trouble figuring what train to take to CT. Thanks again for reply. I probably should have bought Europe 101.

No train stations are called "CT" or "Cinque Terre." Look for trains to LA SPEZIA CENTRALE, Riomaggiore, or Monterosso. La Spezia Centrale would probably be best. From there, local trains run to the 5 towns of the CT.

The local CT trains go from La Spezia, stopping in all 5 towns. They don't appear on Trenitalia. They run frequently, several per hour, but are somewhat sporadic.
