Angela Go to the library or buy RS Italy/Rome Guidebook for ideas on what to see and guide suggestions. My guess is that your cruise will also be going to other Italy destinations so his Italy guidebook will be wonderful for much of your trip. To get the most out of your guide and short time in Rome, suggest you have the guide pick you up at the port. Note. Important to factor in the travel times for your Rome stop. Your cruise disembarkation time does not necessarily mean you will get off the ship at that time. Also it takes at least an hour to get from the port to the center of Rome.
Am I correct in assuming you are flying out of Rome? Then you have to also to figure in the amount of time to get to the airport plus the 2 1/2 hrs you need to get to the airport prior to your departure. As you can see, your Rome stop may be severely restricted. Good luck with your Rome stop! Bobbie

many cruiselines offer bus tours that will then drop you off at airport,, I would look into those. Rome is in fact not the actual place your ship docks perhaps,, i think its out a ways,, so you may not have as much time as you think to go on your own.

We arrive in port in Rome and plan to take an early evening train to Florence. We will fly out of Florence.

Hi Angela, We've been home almost 2 weeks from a cruise which ended in Civitavecchia. I used http://www.airportshuttle.it/ for both a transfer from the port to our hotel, and for the hotel to the airport. I learned about them from this board. They were dependable, well priced, and responsive. The port terminal is not a great place to wait for your car. As a previous poster mentioned,it is impossible to determine when you'll be off the ship , or when your car should be there for you. There are no chairs outside the terminal, nor shelter! We paid 90 euros for a one way transfer, which is not much less than taking the cruise ship's transfer/tour and then getting dropped off. It is a matter of convenience and taste; you'll have to chose to wait on the cruiseline bus, possibly wait for your car, or go light and go public transport.. IF you travel with just your daypack and your carryon, Rick's guide has great explicit directions for what to do and how to get there with public transportation which is the quickest and least expensive.
Definitely- if you could stash your bags somewhere- you could have a very enjoyable day on your own with one of Rick's walks. Have a great time!

What sites do you wish to see? Without knowing you or you telling us what sites you wish to see it's impossible for us to help you other than to suggest you grab a guide book and make a list of what is important to you. You won't have much time so I would rank the sites in order of importance to be sure to see the things that you really wish to see. It would help in suggesting a guide if you would say what you wish the guide for. there are many guides who do different sites and different tours. donna
