Rome cruise

On our 12 day cruise one port is Rome does anyone know what bus we should take once we get off the ship to head to Rome? How far is the actual port to Rome? We don't like taking the boat excursions prefer to do it ourselves and my husband has been to Rome several times so is comfortable showing us the main sights.

Take the train about an hour Train station ten minutes walk from port entrance. See roninrome.com for a description. Search here. The question has been asked a hundred times or more.

The port is actually Civitavecchia, about an hour from the city of Rome. The way to go with public transport is via train. The Civitavecchia train station is about 15 min walk from the port. There are numerous trains (at least two every hour) going to Rome and back. Time of travel and price varies depending on the type of train.
You can check schedules for yourself using:
www.trenitalia.com
Use a date within the next seven days to test, as regional trains schedules are loaded on the site weekly.
Select from: CIVITAVECCHIA
To: ROMA TERMINI
For time (hour) choose an approximate time when you think to depart. Use the 24 hour (military) time.

We cruised to that port in 2012 we found a Fast Track train that you could take which only goes in once a day to Roma S. Pietro. It leaves to go back to the port around 3.30pm The website is WWW.smartcruisetours.com You buy the tickets on the website and there is a guide who accompanies the train there and back. It's a reasonable price and a bit faster than the local trains which would be full of commuters going to work in Rome. The train is non stop and it is fairly short walk to St Peters etc and also has a bus stop right outside the station for getting to other venues in Rome. If you scroll down the website you should see the details for Fast Track Express Train to Rome. We met up with the guide in St Peters Square who walked us all back to the train station and on to the train for the return trip. Have fun in Rome!

Maybe the ship cruise director will have the information you need, but you have to ASK him. He or she would rather sell excursions but we always insist on asking about alternatives and they will be helpful, but you must ask.

Rick Steves has a book on Cruising in that area of Europe. And it is written for travelers like you that don't want to do all the ship excursions. He explains how to get around. He had put it on sale and we bought it to just see the suggestions for a possible future trip and I was done very well.
