There really are no "general" admission tickets anymore. There is a "timed" entry ticket where you choose the time and date you wish to visit and then there are the "open" tickets which are only valid for the colosseum after 2pm. You don't need to pick a date for these but they are only valid for entry after 2pm instead of at anytime like they were in the past.
The tickets that come with tours are timed to the start of your tour and not valid before then. After the tour you can remain inside the colosseum until closing time if you wish. Your tickets will be valid for the forum/palatine hill after your tour or the next day.

What would you recommend "timed" or "general" ? We are traveling the end of August.

If you want to visit in the morning you'll need timed tickets. If you don't mind going in the afternoon an open ticket gives you a little more flexibility.
