My husband and I will be in Rome for 3 nights, and while we do look forward to seeing the sights, are wondering if its worth it to take a 1/2 day trip to the coast? Didn't make it to the coast on my last trip, but this is my hubbies 1st trip to Rome. Any thoughts? And where would you suggest we go that is in close proximity to Rome?
With only 3 nights in Rome you will need that time to see Rome. The coast isn't impressive near Rome, save it for another trip when you can see the Amalfi Coast or another breathtaking coastal view.
Hmari - Since I'm Italian I would strongly disagree with Sam!! 60 miles south of Rome is Sperlonga , an absolutely beautiful seaside village! Yes, there is much to do in Roma but, a half day trip to the sea would be well worth your time!!
Ciao, Greg
There are really neat day trips from Rome, but with only three days here I'd stick to central Rome.
I too would stick to Rome. 3 nights equals only 2 full days.
It's not something you have to commit to now, wait till you get there.
If you find that you would like a break, as GReg said Sperlonga makes a good destination. It's about an hour 15 from Termini to the Fondi Sperlonga station and then (I think) about 20-30 minutes on a bus to the shore.
You don't say what time of the year you'll be there. That would also influence whether to take a daytrip to the coast. But Ron's right. No need to decide now. My bet is that unless you're in Rome during really hot weather, you'll want to stay in the city. There's no shortage of things to see and do in the Eternal City.
Thank you all!
Hi you have me keenly interested in Sperlonga. Do you have any more information? I see that you take the train (to Sperlonga station) and then a bus. Do you know the bus number? Are the beaches free? Would the trip be covered by a Rome transit pass? Anything else I might need to know? Thanks for any info!
My daughter and I are in Rome at the end of our third day (arrived Thursday 6/24 at 10:30) There is no way we could have fit a half day trip to the beach in. It took us until last night to start to feel normal and really didn't feel adjusted to time and getting around city until today. Perhaps if you are staying close to Termini it might be easier. Second best would be if you are close to metro stop (and they don't strike again like yesterday) The train station itself is huge and can be a lot of walking to get where you are going. Part of me does want to go to Sea but we live near Lake Michigan and so we can go to the beach all the rest of summer - we can't see these sites in Rome again so soon!
I spent 3 nights in Rome - one full day sightseeing (inside the Colosseum, ruins of Roman Forum/Palantine, Vatican City, and Trevi Fountain with a few stops in between that I can't remember) - it was a full day but definitely possible. Our last full day we went to Sperlogna. The beach is beautiful and busy but well worth the chance to relax after a long day of sightseeing. The train goes direct from Roma Termini to Fondi, and the bus (it says "Sperlogna" on the front) will pick you up at the bus stop in front of Fondi train station and drop you off in the middle of Sperlogna near the beach. Note that the trains and buses will most likely be late. We left around 8:50am and returned by 5 or 6pm.
Sperlonga is obviously not a half day trip as some have said, if it takes 4+ hrs r/t it's a full day trip. Just sayin... With only 2 days in Rome I'd spend my time in Rome as others have said. You will have come a long way to see it and 2 days isn't much time.
