Rome/Civitavecchia to Neuchatel Switzerland

Family of three / moderate budget

First time poster

Looking for travel tips (post cruise) from Rome/Civitavecchia to Neuchatel to visit my sister-in-law. I've driven this before by car, but I'm wondering if train or short flights might be a better option...? We should have several suitcases in tow. I'm going to post another thread from Neuchatel to Amsterdam - post sister-in-law visit. TIA

You can quickly look up the schedule at www.bahn.com. It is about a 9 to 10 hours journey with at least 3 train changes along the way. Usually at Rome Termini, Milano Centrale, and either Bern or Lausanne in Switzerland.

You could also take the cruise ship's transfer to Rome airport, then either Easyjet or Alitalia flight to Geneva. At Geneva airport, there is a direct train to Neuchatel at 5 past the hour, every hour. Takes 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Flying may be slightly quicker depending on the flight timing.

So, would i book a train in advance in Switzerland or should I just do it upon arrival? It's been over 20 years since I've ridden a train in Switzerland. (Summer travel)

For the all-train route or flying.

If flying, Swiss trains are, for the most part, always the same price. So you would get off the plane, get your luggage, go to the train station and buy 3 tickets to Neuchatel and take the next available train. Cost should be 48 CHF per person. If you book Easyjet, be sure to pay for your luggage (and that includes carry-ons) and seat assignments up front.
