Rome Christmas 2025... good idea?

Hello, my name is Chris, my wife's name is Karen and we love to travel.

Our next trip.... Italy... last week of December and the whole month of January. We are just starting to plan the itinerary. We've been to Northern Italy. Now it's Southern Italy that we want to experience.

We would like to start in Rome, spend Christmas in Rome then head south. But would it be better to avoid Rome during Christmas because of there being too many fellow tourists? Especially because it will still be the Italian Jubilee? Would be better off Starting In Sicily, spend Christmas there, and thenwork our way north?

thanks in advance!

Welcome Chris and Karen to the forum! You're going to get lots of very helpful responses to your post.

First, Rome is good whenever. It is also crowded but planning on your part can easily take care of that. Christmas time (I've not been there then) is on my wish list. In fact, I'm currently planning it for this year and staying the month of January. Crowds basically means do your homework and make any necessary reservations in advance. Downside: lots of work. Upside: you won't be disappointed by 'sold out' signs. My Christmas wish would be being at the Vatican for Christmas Eve and Santa Maria Maggiore for Christmas Day masses.

Heading south! Great plan! The weather automatically gets warmer. My favorite southern hangouts are Sorrento on the Bay of Naples, and Ortigia by Siracusa. From Ortigia there are some very good and interesting day trips to beautiful towns. If you have time, and interest, Palermo (and nearby cities) and Agrigento (and nearby sites) are very powerful experiences.

Enjoy the research! Keep your questions coming - we 're all here with our hints.

Looking at Timeanddate.com, it appears as though the weather in Rome was sunny and 59 degrees in December 2024.

I can not imagine many places more appropriate for Christmas. I did Christmas there once with the family when JPII was still with us. Was present for his blessings. Very special trip.
