Rome - choosing where to stay

I'm looking at some options for places to stay in Rome for 4 nights in June 2016. I am considering only vacation homes that I have access to.. so not hotels etc. Was wanting to get thoughts on the neighborhoods.

1 is near Ara Pacis next to the bridge Ponte Cavour

  1. In Trastevere 300 m from Tiber River Promenade

  2. Near Vatican City - 500 m from a tube station

We want to do all the normal things in Rome. I'm just not sure which neighborhood would be best.. and/or at least acceptable. The places in Trastevere are a little less expensive. Thoughts?

Being near a "tube" station in Rome is not very useful since the "tube" doesn't go anywhere. Being near a bus or tram stop would be more important. In Rome, it is called, The Metro.

Near Vatican City the area is called Prati. Not only is there the Metro, but a tram (#19) that can take you right to Villa Borghese, and a terrific network of buses. It is also easy enough to walk to the historic center, i.e., Piazza Navona and the Pantheon area. Prati is very nice and convenient.

The location by the Ara Pacis is more convenient than one might think, again good buses and very walkable to the Spanish Steps area as well as Campo dei Fiori/Pantheon/Piazza Navona.

Trastevere has more transportation challenges, IMO, depending on where exactly your place is. Traffic on the Lungotevere is crazy (I assume that is what you mean by "Tiber River Promenade" as there is no such proper street name) and can be very noisy.

Trastevere (I can't find agreement on pronunciation other than accent is not on the third syllable) is charming but not elegant so cheaper, bring earplugs. You can walk to almost everything from here if you don't mind 30 minute walks. Rome is a transit challenged city.

kh,

While not on your list, I always prefer to stay near Termini station, as it's so very convenient for transportation. Easy access to Metro, Buses (including HO/HO tours) and trains for day trips. There are some nice hotels in that area, and I find the neighborhoods a few blocks from the station are quite pleasant.

I'm now considering an apartment - located in the heart of ancient Rome, Piazza de Paradiso is only 100 mt. from Piazza Campo de' Fiori and 300 mt. from Piazza Navona. Campo De' Fiori area? Sounds like it would work well for us. I've sort of rules out Trastevere even though it sounds amazing for a visit.

K - Piazza del Paradiso is an excellent location. If you like the apartment, go for it. Buses on Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and at Largo Argentina. Tram #8 to Trastevere is also at Largo Argentina. The excellent bakery Roscioli is nearby, as well as a Punto Simply grocery on Via del Monte della Farina. And you have the Campo dei Fiori market for fresh foods. Salumeria Antica Norceneria Viola cannot be beat for salume.
