Rome Catacombs

Is there a guided tour of the Catacombs? Someone I know highly recommended touring the Catacombs but I am not familiar with how or where to book such a tour. Thanks!

For the ones along the Appian Way, the only way you can tour them is with a guided tour. We toured St. Sebastian and a different language tour left every few minutes. And yes, I'd highly recommend it.

do we need to book in advance, and if so, how far ahead of time? Any idea how much this tour costs> Thanks!

The guided tours are included in the entry fee to San Sebastiano catacombs - can't remember exactly but it was only a few euros. We took a city bus from the train station and got off right in front - went in and were lucky to have an english tour start within 5 minutes - I think they run once an hour. If you are not in a hurry you can spend some time walking the appian way and/or have a meal at a great little outside cafe just a short walk up the road.

You don't need to book ahead and I'm not even sure you're able to do so.

There's an Archeological hop-on / hop-off bus that will take you right to the catacombs. You can pick it up at Termini, among other places.

Also, as mentioned previously, the Appian Way makes for a very interesting stroll or bike ride.

Look into the Scavi Tour at the Vatican. There are catacombs under the Basilica..very interesting! You need to make advanced reservations.
