Rome cat sanctuary

Apologies if this has already been posted and answered (I've spent much less time on the forum, as reading about travel just makes me sad these days) but I was wondering if anyone knew what has happened to the cats at the Rome cat sanctuary since the virus and shutdown?

It is still operating, but with a lot of difficulty. They are in serious need of financial donations. Or, people can order cat food and supplies on line and have them sent to Torre de Argentina. Go to their FB page and there is lots of info. TA will tell you which online store to order from, to make sure it gets there, 🐾 🐈

The Torre de Argentina FB page is Gatti di Roma Roman Cats.
You can find out from their FB page how to make a donation. 🐾🐈

Thanks for reminding us of this need. We enjoyed our visit there 6 months ago.

Thanks for the info. The wife and I were reminded of the sanctuary when watching the drone videos. We have enjoyed several visits there.

I'm impressed that you are thinking of these critters at this time. I stayed at a hotel very close to Largo Argentina and well remember this area. I recall being surprised and thought it funny that Rome uses an archaeological site for a cat sanctuary.
On an uplifting note: I heard on television that pet adoptions in the USA have increased during this time.

Animals are being affected in both good and bad ways. Some pet owners are in the hospital (or worse) and their pets need help. I have no idea how the local animal shelters are doing. I appreciate your concern for the furry ones.

Yes, Sun. Based on a news report late March, my secretary and I exchanged name and phone # of health care power of attorney, plus, who has key to our house and could do short term pet care until P of A would get to town, but since hospitals can't have visitors..... anyway, the theme of the report was, don't you want yr critter fed if something happens to you?

Because I am driving by Petco tomorrow, I just placed a curb side pickup order.... it was advanced calculus trying to find a combination of packages and brands that were actually in that store. Somewhere in central Iowa there are some well supplied cats. Perhaps w the pet guardians who have 300 rolls of toilet paper.

Sun, it's not that Rome uses an archaeological site as cat sanctuary. Cats have been living among those ruins for decades (if not centuries) and now dispersing or moving pre-existing cat colonies is forbidden. Archaeologists have never had the guts to go against the widely held sentiment about those cats, but never say never.

Thanks, Dario.
I'm glad the cats are receiving care and that Rome's citizens generally like the cats. I thought those cats were available for adoption. I read a plaquard at Largo Argentina that gave info. on cat adoption.

Other cities with lots of cats are Athens, Greece and Istanbul, Turkey. Istanbul has some great small parts with small cat shelters just for the cats.

I was there in 2018. Great place. So many cats! Bought several souveniers.

Just on the cat theme, Bermuda and Kauai are both islands with significant feral cat populations and people trying to care for them

I have a friend who was a seminarian in Rome in the 1960s. He says he was told that the Romans care for the cats because they feel guilty about having had to eat them during WWII.
