Rome Castel Sant’Angelo

Hi. I am considering visiting Castel Sant’Angelo after timed visits to the Vatican (8:30 AM) and St Peter's Basilica (early afternoon) on Monday, 21 September. I noticed on the ticketing website that Mondays are greyed out, along with the following note:

Special Ticket: Starting 3 August 2026, the "Castle Mondays" initiative returns. Throughout 2026, the museum will also be open on the first Monday of every month, a day when it is normally closed, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (last admission at 7:00 p.m.), with a special admission ticket priced at € 5. Tickets can be purchased exclusively at the museum ticket office. Online booking is not available.

My read of this is that if I want to visit on Monday the 21st, I must purchase, in person, a €5 ticket (vs. the normal admission fee of €18).

Seeking confirmation that my interpretation is correct, as AI searches gave conflicting information about €5 entry on Mondays.

If I can work this into my day, should I expect long queues at the box office?

Hi, Giangilberto from Milan, so your date is Monday 21 september, that is the third monday, not the first. The first is 7 september. So on the 21st the museum is closed, and the €5 ticket doesn't apply.
Let's start by saying that this is a very common mistake, and many people make it. Castel Sant'Angelo is usually closed on Mondays, except the first Monday of each month, for the whole of 2026, when there is a special admission fee of €5.00.
Tickets must be purchased at the ticket office only and no groups are admitted. These are individual, nominative tickets, the full price rose to €18 on 1 July.
The original document is required, and if the information doesn't match, there will be no entry and no refund.
I should also add that the Castel Sant'Angelo ticket includes free admission to the Boncompagni Ludovisi House Museum and the Hendrik Christian Andersen House Museum on the day of your visit and the two following days. €18.00 for three museums in three days.
Presumably, but this is my deduction, on the first Monday of the month, given the discounted price and the fact that tickets must be purchased exclusively at the ticket office, you'll find longer lines than on any other day when you can visit at full price.

Since it is closed on the 21st, you can visit it on tuesday the 22nd at full price, and with the same ticket you get free entry to the other two museums until the 24th.
