Rome Car Rental pick-up

We are renting a car in Rome to drive through Tuscany. I have read several posts about not picking up in Rome. We are staying near the Pantheon and plan on picking up at Rome Termini Railstation...suggested by several posts. I understand the suggestion of picking up at the airport but by the time we get all 8 of us to the airport at 11 euros each and pay the extra airport pickup tax....it will be another 30% of our rental fee.

Are there a lot of ZTLs near the station and is it fairly easy to navigate out of Rome from there...or is there a better place to pick up near our hotel.

Thanks for any help.

The ZTL aren't a huge problem when you try to get out of town from Termini. Get a GPS and it'll guide you out without touching them.

However, traffic is really crazy. That can be very stressful. We picked up our car around noon so we'd at least avoid the worst rush hour traffic. It was manageable but not fun ...

Your question: Are there a lot of ZTLs near the Termini station?I haven't done the drive, but I've been told that traffic is the problem, not ZTL's.Your question: Is it fairly easy to navigate out of Rome from the Termini station...or is there a better place to pick up near our hotel? You don't say where your hotel is located.Your question: Is it fairly easy to navigate out of Rome from the Termini station?I haven't tried it (I pick up at the airport). The consensus of opinion on this forum, of people who have done it, is that tje answer to the question "is it fairly easy to navigate out of Rome from the Termini station?"--would be no, it's not what most people would candidly describe as "fairly easy." It's possible, people on this forum have done it. A GPS and detailed instructions from someone at rental car office would be a big help.
