We will be arriving Rome from the north and are faced with a number of "Rome" drop off locations for our rental car. Any suggestions for choosing a drop off spot? Airport? Center of the city?

Drop at the airport. No extra charges; convenient hours and it's easy to train into Rome. I wouldn't want to drive into Rome to drop.

I would agree with Doug. Unless you're very comfortable driving in Italy I would take advantage of the Airport drop-off and ride the train/taxi in.
There are probably 30+ Avis & Hertz drop-off's in Rome, but even with a GPS it can be intimidating! The easiest (and probably least stressful method) is the airport...
If you're BOLD and confident, head to Termini Station - a major drop off for many car rental agencies, and then you'll be able to catch a "registered" cab to your hotel/apt. (Although most reputable car rental agencies WILL call you a cab!).
