Rome buses

I am hopeless with buses, even when I speak the language and know the community. They intimidate me, and I have a skill for getting on the right bus going the wrong way. With that prelude, can anyone tell me the easiest way to get from Santa Maria Maggiore to the Vatican? I've used the Metro before, but it's a long walk at the Vatican end, and I'm a little short on time. How would I figure out if there's a bus route that would work better?

The Metro is actually your best choice. It is not a long walk (IMHO) from the Ottaviano stop to the museums. It's about an 8 minute walk; 12 to Piazza San Pietro. Any time you save from walking will be eaten up waiting for a bus and transferring, but you can get a #64 or a #40 at Termini, which will drop you near San Pietro.
