Can I buy a bus ticket (NOT using Roma Pass) the day before, and not validate it until I want to use it, or do I have to validate it the same day of purchase?

I usually buy a handful of tickets at a time, in case the tabacchi that sell the are closed when I need a ticket. At the major bus stations there are automated kiosks that sell tickets. Some buses have ticket-dispensing machines. There's also a day-long pass (not 24 hours, just until midnight after you validate it) available from tabacchi shops (although sometimes they are out of them). Remember to validate once you board.

Liz, I often pre-purchase tickets and then just validate when needed. They're available at the stations, from Tabac shops, etc. In Rome I typically get the B.I.G. ticket, which is a daily ticket that can be used on all modes of transport within the city. They expire at midnight on the day of validation. Note that with tickets of that type, they only have to be validated the first time you use them, and not every time you use a Bus (or whatever). If you're going to be riding the infamous #64 (or to a lesser extent #40) Buses, be vigilant for pickpockets. Happy travels!
