how can I obtain a legible map of Rome's bus routes? The ones I print on line are too small to read the numbers, even when I enlarge the maps.

Did you see these? http://www.turismoroma.it/about-rome/mappe?lang=en The physical tourist info offices in Rome sometimes have printed transit maps available. Rick's book shows several key lines as they relate to the sites covered in the book.

If you will have mobile data there are several great apps for buses in Rome -

And, if you have a mobile data plan, Google Maps is pretty accurate with bus & metro directions. (The #1 reason to have a fully-functional smartphone with traveling.)
