For more atmosphere than Termini area, somewhere in area between the Pantheon, Campo de' Fiori, and Piazza Navona. The area around Termini has become less desirable in the past couple of years. It is (probably) safe enough, you will enjoy the area I mentioned from the point of view of ambiance. You can get great bus connections, the Christmas lights are stellar, and much of Roma is walkable from there.

To sleep five people comfortably in Rome, you'll need plenty of research. You don't mention budget, and that will make all the difference in the world. If quiet matters to you, avoid staying on a main street. Check Google Street View to check each location and its proximity to vehicular traffic.

Three nights in Rome goes by faster than a sneeze. As long as you are not miles away from the city center, I would focus less on location and more on sleeping comfort and budget. Typically, the closer you are to the center - the Pantheon, Campo de' Fiori, and Piazza Navona areas - the smaller and more expensive the space will be. Rooms in the center can be no larger than shoe boxes. Be sure to check the square meters, if they even offer that info. Many places in the center don't want to advertise how small their rooms are.

To have a "fun experience" in Rome during a three-night stay is not a difficult thing to find. You don't need to be in a specific neighborhood or on a specific street to accomplish that. If you enjoy where you sleep, "fun" will happen no matter where you choose to lodge.

You might benefit from an apartment with a group of 5. There are many in my recommended area but do not overlook Prati, near the Vatican, which is a nice residential area. Look at what is offered by Cross-Pollinate.com, VRBO, Homeaway, Booking.com.

It is a busy time in Roma so you will want to get this done ASAP.
