We stayed at the Stendhal Hotel on the Via Tritone and liked it and my room had a private terrace. Staff very helpful. Five minute walk to Trevi Fountain and about 10 minutes to the Spanish Steps area. Able to walk to the Termini train station and to the Vatican. Caught an Uber to the Trastevere though as it was raining and night time, otherwise we walked everywhere (and we are in our 60s)

As a first-time traveler, I would stay in the Pantheon area. You’ll be walking distance of most major attractions. I would also stay closer to Via del Corso, since it offers better access to public transportation. So in the Pantheon area in the side of Via del Corso.
