Rome, best neighborhood for us ?

Hi !

We (2 adults) will be in Rome in next july and we are looking the best place to stay (Hotel or appartment) for our needs. here's some ideas to help us find the best location :

Budget: we could up to 160 euro by night

First time visitor so we want to do the same stuff first timers do !

Food lovers; We want to enjoy great meals

Not fan of nightclub

We can walk, take public transport or a cab if needed.

Trastevere seems nice but would it be the best for us ? It seems also to be a somehat large neigborhood, any indications which streets would be the best ?

Thanks a lot in advance !

My husband and I love the Trastevere neighborhood. It is within easy walking distance of Campo di Fiori and main transportation routes. The area has many good restrauants. Enjoy.

Hotel Santa Maria in Trastevere is awesome. There are lots of restaraunt options nearby.

Our preferred area to stay is around Termini. Great local restaurants in the area, near the transit center of Rome (Termini) and you can walk to everything, except - maybe, the Vatican. We have done it but it is an hour walk to the Vatican area from the Termini area. Our preference for hotels in that area is Sonya (across from Opera House) and the Aberdeen (next to Justice Department.) All of Rome is one large neighborhood so not sure what you are driving at with the comment about a large neighborhood. July is not the best time to see Rome as it will be very hot and very crowded. Good luck.

If you're not a fan of a lively night scene, don't stay in Trastevere between Piazza Trilussa and Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere. Stay south of Piazza SMT, say near Piazza San Cosimato.

Thanks for those answers !

being near train station is not mandatory and often those place are a bit sketchy, maybe is not the case in Rome. I know july is not a good time, but our vacation are in july and august it means that we have two choice:

1) Living with heat and crowd and go in july

2) Wait that we dont work anymore at 65 years old and maybe be dead before seing Rome.

We have made our choice.

We dont care about being in a living quarter, but we dont need to go in bar late in night

Sketchy is in the eye of the beholder. We have been to Rome a half a dozen times or so over the past 15 years and always stay around Termini (south and west) simply for convenience to transit. It is more commercialized with dozens of hotels and restaurants and lots of activity. It is local Rome. A big, busy, hustling city. But we have never felt it as unsafe or sketchy - just busy. While we like to visit Trastevere it is a bit out of the way and you need public transit to most of the core sites.

The Monti neighborhood southwest of Termini is great, I stayed there on my solo trip to Italy in October 2016. I stayed at a hotel called 95 Rooms in Rome on Via Panisperna. You can walk to the Coliseum from there, also to the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps (longish walks). The Cavour metro station is nearby--the area around the station feel like a real, authentic neighborhood. It's true the area around train stations can be sketchy, Munich comes to mind. I did not find anything in that direction from Termini to be remotely sketchy.

Have you looked around the Jewish quarter (the old ghetto)? I got an apartment there last year and it was a great location. Easy walks to Campo di fiori, less than 10 minutes to the Pantheon, not too far to the Forum, and there's a tram that goes down to Trastevere. The Main Street through what's left of the ghetto is lined with restaurants- the ones I went to were all good- and people hanging out. There's also grocery nearby if you can't make the market at the Campo. Lively without being loud.

I stayed in an apartment near the Vatican last June. I took the bus anywhere I didn't walk with 2 exceptions. I was torn between a place in Trastevere and Prati, but I read too many comments about the noise at night in Trastevere, so I chose Prati.

I was in Trastevere on a Saturday night for an EatWith dinner with Federica & Barbara, and it easily confirmed that I'd made the right decision. The party ran late, so I got to see the heart of the neighborhood at its rowdiest and busiest time.

You can Google "rome neighborhoods" and find lots of details about them as well as maps. This is just one example.

I was a little confused by "large" neighborhood. I used Google maps to find my way around. You can even get public transport information from it. If I got lost, I invariably learned that things were much closer than I expected. My greatest challenge was the tendency for streets to change names or not be marked at all. So when you come to an intersection, look at all the corners for the street names, including the ones behind you!

I found my apartment using Booking.com. It is La Porta Rossa di Borgo -- Vatican Luxury Suite. There are 2 apartments there. I stayed in the 1 bedroom with the green sofa, the green upholstered seat on the balcony and the lavender bed. The apartment is listed on many other rental sites.
