We will be in Rome from May 10-17, 2017. What is the best area to look for a hotel so it is close to public transportation for seeing all of the sights?
Thanks
I usually stay in the area of the Central Train Station - there are dozens of nice hotels near there and there is metro underground. To me it is perfect for getting all over the Rome area.
Hotels I have stayed in: Beehive (a hostel), Contila, Sonya - all were very nice. You can check them out on tripadvisor and see photos, rates, etc.
I prefer the area of the Centro Storico. My favorite now is Hotel Fori Imperiali Cavalieri, off Via Cavour and close to the Colosseo.
My vote is for Campo dei Fiori/Largo Argentina area. It looks like the responses are going to be all over the place with this topic. So, here are my reasons - 1). Close to many sites like Pantheon, Campo dei Fiori, Piazza Navona, largo Argentina, many churches. 2) close to restaurants, banks, outdoor market (again, the Campo), laundromat. 3) Close to transportation - buses and taxis. 4). Walking distance to many things. 5). Historic Roman atmosphere.
I like the Campo also, just spent 6 nights at the Smeraldo. Had TMobile google maps which produced the closest bus stop and bus number and even the number of stops, if we didnt feel like walking. I have wlaked from the Borghese Villa back to Smeraldo, so 'close' is relative. Great as well as good food is also near the Campo- used Katie Parla and hotel recommendations. " Emma" was a great meal.
I also like the Campo di Fiori or Piazza Navona area.
Rome is walkable enough that if you stay in center (campo de fiori, pantheon, navona area), that you will not need public transportation to most things you want to see.
We'll be staying at an apartment on Campo de' Fiori for 6 nights in late February. Did two nights at a hotel in the area 6 years ago, and for what little time we had there were treasure troves to be found in every direction. Looking forward to the Palazzo Farnese, which is a stone's throw away!
We just stayed in Rome and stayed near the US embassy. It was quiet with some really good restaurants (not touristy) in the neighborhood. We did have a hefty walk to places, but it was close to Spanish Steps, Bourghese Park, and definitely doable if you are used to walking a lot.
I definitely recommend the centro storico (Piazza Navona, Campo di Fiori, Pantheon, etc.) area. Easy to walk almost everywhere and there are a plethora of holiday apartments in all price ranges.
