Rome at night stuff

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for an idea for our first night in Rome. When in Paris, we did the Renault car tour to acquaint ourselves with the city before a late dinner. We’ll have taken a nap and will be up for anything.

What we have no interest in is clubs/bars or anything like that.

Are there sites that folks out there enjoyed more in the evening than they did during the day? Or experiences/tours, etc?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Kevin,

Yes, your first night, you want to take it easy. Get acclimated around your hotel area. Enjoy a nice dinner and wine, espresso and a sweet or a flute of limoncello.

I arrive about lunch time in Rome. I get my bag. Go to catch my reserved shuttle and off I go to the city centre. I arrive just around check-in. I settle in. Unpack and organize. Shower and Dress, and I am off to dinner. Returning, I browse a bit on my Kindle until I am sleepy. I get a good night's sleep.

Check out the "Walks Of Italy" Welcome to Rome: Twilight City Stroll

If you look at the itinerary, perhaps you can customize one of your own using the model itinerary they offer.

Also, if your time allows, check out this video by Pro Walks for more ideas -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vK928kqYUPI -- A Rome Walking Tour. He has a lot of Italy videos. He holds the camera steady. No loud background music -- just the sights and sounds of normal Italian life with locals and visitors. It can be fun to watch.

Rome is absolutely beautiful -- a walking outside museum. Around every corner seems to be a surprise. Hope you will love it.

These two “shows” are fabulous http://www.viaggioneifori.it/en/. In the Forum of Augustus, you sit on bleachers to watch, and in the Forum of Caesar you walk through. Each provides an audio guide in your choice of language.

The last time we went to Rome, we arrived at 9:00 am after an overnight flight. We got to our apartment and dropped our bags and walked around a little bit and had lunch. Everyone was very tired from the flight, so we went back to the apartment and took an hour nap which allowed us to wake up refreshed.

Then we spent the evening doing Rick's Heart of Rome walk. We stopped at a nice restaurant just a bit off the beaten path for dinner during the walk.

That walk is magical at night, and is a great way to spend your first evening without doing too much

Kevin, we've always enjoyed just a random walkabout: no tour and no set plan. You don't know what sort of weather you might run into, and you don't know how well that nap might work (we NEVER nap on arrival day) so I'd keep your options loose. The only things I'd avoid are any pre-set tours - in case your flight is delayed or cancelled - or indoor attractions that demand a lot of wide--awake attention.

You don't mention where you'll be staying or what time of year?

You’re all wonderful. Thank you. This is a trip in the middle of March. Haven’t booked our hotel/apartment yet. Probably going to stay west of the Tiber as well have early mornings at the Vatican on back to back days.

My favorite evening is when I walk, comfortably, from Trastevere (dinner at Carlo Menta) to the Foro Romano. The (relatively) quiet and the effective lighting of the ruins, gives the feeling of a look back 2000 years. It really is very theatrical. Then I walk, comfortably still, to the Fontana Trevi, the Piazza Rotunda (great lighting on the Pantheon), and finish with a gelato by the Bernini fountain in Piazza Navona. Sometimes I'll extend the walk to St. Peter's. The key is doing everything comfortably and enjoying every step of the way.
