Rome at Easter time

I'm planning a vacation to Rome/Italy beginning the day after Easter. I'm concerned that the city may be too crowded and accommodation/restaurants/museums may not be available. Please give any advice you have about the timing of this trip.

Easter Monday is a national holiday in Italy. Some of the worst crowds in Rome, all year, are the few days prior to Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, and usually several days after Easter as well. This is just the way it is. It's better to have realistic expectations about being in Rome during the Easter period. If you're not locked into those dates yet, it would be better to be in Rome starting a week after Easter Sunday.

I was in Rome from Palm Sunday until Easter Saturday of this year. I did think that there were less tourists then on my previous visit, three years earlier. Economics perhaps.

I try to avoid the month of April all together. There are too many holidays that month and since it's Easter and you are in Rome/Vatican, accommodations will probably be hard to get and very expensive if you do get one. Yes, the city will be crowded and businesses will be closed for each of the holidays. May is always a good bet AFTER the May 1st holiday, of course.
