My wife and I are thinking about going to Rome for a week either before Christmas or between Christmas and New Years. How is it? Is it really packed and crowed at this time of year or doable? Thanks for your time and feedback.

I was in Rome Xmas 2008. I have been in June and in September also. Rome is always crowded, but this time of year I saw more Italians on holiday than at other times, I arrived on the 24th and was there to the 31st and had a great time. No public transportation on Xmas Day and weather in low 50's with 2 or 3 days of rain.
