We're planning to be in Rome for Christmas. Any tips on attending midnight mass in St Peter's Square? Should we try to stay close to the Vatican?
I was in Rome Xmas 2008 staying at Hotel Aberdeen near the termini. Rather than go to the Vatican and fight the crowds, I walked to nearby Santa Maria Maggiore (also a Vatican church). The ceremony was very moving. Just another option.
