Thinking about Rome over Christmas Break. How bad are the crowds? What about the week after Christmas?
Hate to say, "What do you think?" It is the peak of the Christian year. Rome always has crowds and with the Vatican activity and a new pope I would expect this year to be more crowded than past years. The week after will be just as bad as most Christmas activities continue till Jan 6th.
The crowds are part of what make Rome at Christmas magical. Or so I've heard. Check out RonInRome's take on "Rome for the Holidays" here: http://www.roninrome.com/living-in-italy/holiday-events-in-rome
Beth, crowds aside, it is a magical time in Rome during the Christmas season.
I wouldn't miss this opportunity! I was in Rome for Easter a year ago and it was fantastic! Got tickets to Easter Sunday Mass (through my church here) and was one of the hundred thousand who had Communion from the Pope! I can just imagine how beautiful Rome will be with all of the Creches, and lights and decorations. Who cares if it's crowded. It's crowded all summer too! DO make your hotel reservations ASAP!
