Rome, Assisi, Orvieto, by bus in one day

I know, I know.....We will be in Rome 4 days and 2 of them are taken up with sightseeing. Want to go to Ostia, also.
Then, can we make a day trip of Rome, Assisi, Orvieto by bus?

Taking the train we have to leave around noon. We could take a bus earlier in the day and take the train back to Rome in the evening.

Is that too crazy. We are doing a little cramming on this part of my trip.

Nancy,
My husband and I scheduled a trip from Rome to Assisi by train and it was fun, but took forever. In Italy, you never know if the train is going to be on time, delayed while in transit, etc. We had to add four hours onto our day's plans. Also, it's not as quick a ride from Assisi to Orvieto (or visa-versa) as you might gather. Pick one or the other and really enjoy the culture difference in that town.

I was writing an animated feature that had Assisi as an important factor in the story, so we had to pick it, while our friend went to Orveito. We both had totally different stories and experiences that we wouldn't trade for anything.

Take a good look at RS's DVD's on the areas and decide then. You can buy your train ticket the same day.

Have a blast!

Yes, its crazy but so what. Why do you feel that you have to leave around noon on the train? There are trains departing Rome Termini for Assisi as early as 5:50am that will get you to Assisi at 8:55am 2.5hr trip). On this run, you hit Spoleto at 7:17am. A bit early to be sure. But, on the R trains, you can hop off and hop back on a later train. The later train could be an issue because it could come through 2hrs later. The next train out of Rome departs at 7:55am with an arrival time in Assisi of 10:16am. CLICK HERE to see the morning runs. These train runs do not stop at Orvieto.

If you arrive on the train in Assisi, you are still some distance from the Assisi hill town. You go next door to the little shop and buy a round-trip ticket on the Line C bus. I suggest that you take it to the end of the line which is the top of the town. Assisi streets can be quite steep. Starting at the top, you easily walk down to the Basilica. Tour there, catch the bus back to the train station and train back to Rome.

Bus runs from Rome to Assisi are limited. The train runs are more flexible. CLICK HERE to see the afternoon and evening runs. You can see the fares as well.

Note that most nice restaurants in Assisi close from 4-7.

How funny. I have used this site many times. Today when I pulled up the route from Rome to Assisi the earliest time I got was late morning.

Hmmm, will have to figure that one out.
Thnx. Now to figure out how to get from Assisi to Orvieto, bus or train.

Related to this topic:

I checked two sites: Italian rail and German rail for

Florence into Assisi and return for Sunday June 14, 2009 and it shows that they do not run. However, I also put in the dates for this upcoming Sunday and it shows a schedule.

Is there a possibility that (when far in advance) they (train sites) do not know the schedule?

Could be. But I am trying to go to both Assisi and Orvieto, from Rome in one day.

Doesn't look like I can make it. The train schedules don't work. Too bad.

Well, there is always the next time!

Judy and Nan, the Trenitalia website updates next in mid-June. Look out any farther and you have already experienced what you get - very sketchy results. I'm still using dates in late May but I'm running out of days. I'll use the early June days until Trenitalia updates. I've posted the runs from Rome to Assisi. The same quantity runs from Florence to Assisi as well. It's also a 2.5hr. trip. We've done that one. At the Florence train station, your train won't say "Assisi" on it. It will say "Foligno". Assisi is just a stop on the way.

You mean Trenitalia updates mid-month? I thought it had to do something with the dates, but I was within a month so thought it would work.

Thanks much.

NanC....yes, it's the biannual pain-in-the-neck schedule updates. As of 13 June, the new schedules are in effect, even tho you'll likly find few changes. Unfortunately, Trenitalia and RENFE are notorious for waiting to the last second to upload them.
