Rome, Assisi, Florence

We would like to stop in Assisi on our way to Florence. We will have our luggage with us and would therefore need a bus that could hold our luggage and wait for us while we tour Assisi and then bring us to Florence. How can we find such a tour/transportation?

You will not. Public buses just don't do that. You best bet is to see if the Assisi bus station has a luggage storage area. Most do but not always. The other choice is a hired car. You did not say where you were coming from.

Donna, I have looked at this option myself for our upcoming trip. I think it is very doable. If you leave Rome on an early train for Assisi you can store your baggage at the train station outside of Assisi and then take the bus into the center of town. After sight seeing from 11:00 or so until 3:00 pm or so you can grab the bus back to the train station collect your bags and head to Florence. If you look at the trenitalia website you can plot out your course and find train times that fit with your plan for the day. I pieced this together using the RS Italy book and the trenitalia website. Good luck!

When we purchased our bus tickets in the small store adjacent to the Assisi train station, we noticed that the store does seem to store the luggage. We didn't see anything really secure but we did see lots of luggage. It's up to you at this point. (Note that the Assisi train station is not in Assisi. It's in the town adjacent to it. But, the sign at the train station says Assisi. I have a picture). If you do decide to do this and you are in the small store, buy a ticket on the Line C bus and take it to the top of the hilltown. Then, you casually tour the town while walking down. The Basilica is at the bottom. The hills there are a bit steep and its far more enjoyable to walk down that it is up.

I'm not speaking from experience, but from my research I think Assisi deserves more time. We plan to spend two nights in Assisi arriving late from Siena and leaving early to Rome with a whole day for Assisi in between.

You can see the church in a couple of hours, easy, and spend one more in the town, including having a bite to eat.

Donna, I loved Assisi and also recommend staying longer if it is possible. Besides the Basilica, there are other nice little walks through the old town - lovely stroll at night as well.
