Rome as hub or Orvieto

I'm going to Italy for 10 days in November. Based on prior feedback I'm planning Rome, Orvieto and Sorrento. I have gotten a very good deal on a hotel in Rome so I'm wondering if I can/should delete staying in Orvieto and instead organize day trips out of Rome. Can we match the Orvieto experience in this manner. We generally prefer to settle into a hotel/apt rather than move often, especially my wife who cannot seem to find a way to travel light!! Appreciate your help.

I love Orvieto but I'd use Rome as my hub--could you plan for 2 nights in Orvieto and the rest in Rome?

Also, it's approximately a 4-hour train trip from Rome to Sorrento--too far for a day trip.

When I picture a hub, I picture leaving the town and returning there often.

So the question might be, which town is easier to get out of and back into on a regular basis.

Is the Rome hotel with the good deal well positioned to help with this daily "commute"?

You didn't say if you're driving or using trains. Rome is certainly hard to drive out of or into. If I were driving, I'd rather be in Orvieto than Rome.

If you're going by train, either Rome or Orvieto will be easy if your hotel is near the train station. In Rome, if not near the train station, I'd hope you'd be near a subway station or bus stop.

If you have a good enough deal on the hotel, then certainly it makes sense to keep the Rome hotel the entire trip, even if it means paying for nights in Sorrento. Orvieto can be done as a day trip, plan maybe two nights in Sorrento. Having the room in Rome means leaving most of your stuff there, and travelling light to Sorrento, plus no having to worry about where you will return to. The other option is to make to hotel reservation minus the nights in Sorrento, and see if the hotel will hold some bags until return.

I can't speak for Sorrento, but Orvieto can certainly be done as a daytrip. We did stay in the town, and found the night time to be interesting, but quiet (this was in November as well). I don't think it was so unique as to warrant giving up a really good hotel deal in Rome. There are plenty of trains that run back and forth from Rome to Orvieto and they only take about an hour each way.
