I plan to be in Rome for 4 days in September. Is it reasonable to travel from Rome to Siena for a single day and return to Rome and another day to Assisi and back to Rome. Or get room in Siena and go to Assisi from Rome. John
OPTION 1: Go to Assisi in the morning, visit Assisi, stay in Assisi overnight. Next morning go down to Santa Maria degli Angeli (at the bottom of the hill) and catch a bus to Siena (departs at 10:20am and arrives at 11:50. Visit Siena all afternoon, then at 7:27pm catch a train back to Rome (change at Chiusi). OPTION 2: Go to Assisi, in the morning, visit Assisi. Catch the last train to Florence which departs from Assisi at 7:17pm. Sleep in Florence.
Next morning from Florence go to Siena. Visit Siena then from Siena go to Rome. Visiting Assisi or Siena from Rome is not optimal because it's a 3 hour trip each way. Or you could forget about both, and stay in Rome instead. 4 days is not really a lot, but if you want to take a day trip from Rome, how about going to Orvieto instead? Or even Florence? Orvieto is one hour away, Florence is 90 min away with the fast train.
I would not think of Assisi or Siena as daytrips from Rome. Technically it could be done, but you'll spend as much time or a bus or train as seeing the towns. If staying overnight in either Assisi or Siena is not an option, I'd strongly consider saving those towns until your next visit to Italy. Also as an FYI - Siena is better served by bus to/from Rome than train. More schedule options and no transfer. Assisi is well linked to Rome by train. Assisi/Siena are better linked by bus.
Thanks for the information. Rome will be separate experience and I'll plug into Siena and Assisi as suggested. John
