Rome Arrival 7 days before a cruise

In May 2019 we fly into Rome on the 8th and leave on a cruise on the 15th. I want to spend at least 3 days in Rome and go south to visit Montecasino and WWII sites. Because the dock is quite a ways away from Rome, would you recommend going outside of Rome first then staying in Rome the 3 nights before we leave? Would it matter? I get anxious about arrivals to our ships in the past. Is it easy to get to the port from Rome? Our first time there and I want to enjoy and see as much as we can without being exhausted.

Thanks for the help,

J

Rome is a 4 day city. I'd say go there first to get your feet on the ground, leave town and come back for the balance of time.
Getting out to Civitavecchia is very easy from either Termini or San Pietro train station--45 minutes or so. Once you get there, it's a pretty good hike to the front of the port where you catch a bus out to the ship. You can also take a taxi or a city bus to the front of the port.

Staying in Rome at the beginning of your trip makes sense, since it allows you to get over your jet lag. Not sure what other WW II sites you want to visit besides Monte Cassino. Anzio isn't that far . Salerno might be stretching things a bit, given the time you have. At any rate, instead of returning to Rome, why not just spend the last night in Civitavecchia?

Thank you for the input. Anzio and Montecassino are the 2 main places.
