Rome - Aquaducts and Catacombs

I would like some information please... I have heard of the aquaducts and the park around it. I am not sure this is the offical name for it. It is where they brought water into the city during ancient times. Also, I believe in that direction are the Catacombs. Suggestions on the best ones to see? Do you take a bus out to this area of Rome? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Marcia

Thanks Steve. I had read that some of the Catacombs were much busier than others. The Aqueducts look very interesting. We will be adding this to our trip in September.

The best catacombs are along the Appian Way. They are San Sebastiano and San Callisto. We took the bus from Termini, to San Giovani, to Appian Way. The Aquaducts are visible way in distance from the Appian Way - about three miles from the bike rental shop - but you can't get to them from the Appian Way. We rented bikes and rode along the Appian Way on a Sunday when there is no car traffic and visited the Catacombs and the other monuments. The fields of wildflowers were beautiful and getting a peek at some of the beautiful private villas we great, too. Then we took the bus back to the Piazza San Giovani took the metro out to Aquaduct Park. It was NOT easy to find when we got out of the metro. We asked two young people who turned out the to be university students for directions. They ended up walking us all the way (15 minutes or so) to the park entrance. If not for them we would have never found it. And we consider ourselves good map readers.

You don't need to book a tour of the catacombs. When you get to each site you must take their tour guide through the catacombs. Just take a bus to the site you decide on and wait for the next tour. They have many a day so you won't wait long.

I used Ron in Rome instructions for getting to the aquaduct park (which includes photos to help to know which way to go)and they are VERY accurate. I went by myself, used Ron's directions, enjoyed my walk through the community to the park and treated myself to a caffe on my way back to the metro. It was a wonderful way to spend a morning and I highly recommend it.
