We are flying into Rome and would like to recoup and look around of a couple of days before renting our car and heading to Montepulciano. Could anyone suggest a small, less expensive apartment in an area convenient to see a few sites while we are there? And a restaurant suggestion would be nice also.
We used cross-pollinate.com to find our apartment. It had the most economical apartments of all the apartment services I tried. We were very happy with ours-however I don't see it listed right now on the web site. Ours was owned by a man whose mother would rent it out while he was gone. He may be using it right now. They have others though and they were wonderful to deal with.
Cross Pollinate is awesome, but we found our Rome apt on VRBO.com.(#13150)
$100 US/nite, easy acces from the airport (2 blocks from a train stop), overlooking a river and a park, great restaurants nearby, and on two express bus lines to the sights.
I have used cross-pollinate.com in Rome, Venice and Florence and just this fall, in Paris where we had a studio apartment for a week. We were very happy with our accommodations which were primarily in residential areas close to smaller mom and pop restaurants. Aside from the cities mentioned above, they also have accommodations in Barcelona.
From the Rick's graffiti wall postings I found and used www.romeby.com. Extremely pleased with it. Had a fabulous apartment in the old Jewish Ghetto section of Rome. Travestre is often considered the less expensive and less touristy part of Rome. Check out the graffiti wall for your restaurant suggestions. Should be under Mouth Watering Italy. BTW with the exception of the Vatican all the "sites" are fairly close to one another. Try Google Maps. Type in Rome Italy and click on the satellite image. Especially helpful when you do decide where you are staying as you can then locate exactly where you'll be and how close you are to the sites.
