Rome apartment rental recommendations?

Hi all,

I'm bug eyed staring at way too many Rome apartment rentals and reading way to many conflicting opinions/reviews. So why would I ask for more? I don't know. Just find myself extremely indecisive. We're a family of three--two adult children and one father. My son has some dietary restrictions and I want an apartment so we can cook (and not eat out every meal in Rome). Trastevere? Campo di Fiori?
Piazza Navona area? Please send your recommendations (sigh).
Grazie,
Andy in Eugene, OR

Hi Andy. We stayed in the Palazzo Olivia apartments in Rome last September & loved it. The apartment building is located in between Campo de Fiori & Piazza Navona. Look at the reviews on Trip Advisor. The location was absolutely perfect & it's on a quiet ally right off a main street (Vittorio Emmanuele) on which you'll find a taxi stand, internet cafe, ATM's, bus stops, etc. right around the corner. It's close to lots of restaurants, shops, etc. We loved being so close to Piazza Navona and hanging out there in the evenings after dinner with a gelato. There are various sized apartments so you can select the one that best suits your needs. The building has an elevator which was convenient with all our luggage & the apartment was air conditioned which came in really handy too. The apartment we stayed in was really clean, comfortable and much larger than a hotel would have been. I believe all the apartments include a kitchen. I would not hesitate to stay there again. Have a wonderful trip.

I can relate.... I spent many hours in front of the computer trying to find an apartment. We finally rented this apartment http://www.thekeytoitaly.com/Apartment-Scarpetta-II.html

and barring any unforeseen circumstances (like volcanic ash!) will be staying there next month so unfortunately I cannot give a personal recommendation yet.

Reviews were good on another site and my daughter is finishing a semester in this area which is why we picked it. She loves the Trastevere and Campo di Fiori neighborhoods.

There were several other apartments that looked good but we need to sleep 5 people. Luckily the 5th person is only there a few nights and will use the sleeper couch. Finding apartments that slept more than 4 was really difficult.

Good luck - I know what you're going through!

Bravo Andy! It's good to see someone ask about apt stays in Italy rather than hotels. We have rented apts all over Italy and also stayed in hotels out of necissity. Apts or houses are the best without question. We rented a small apt in Trastevere a couple years ago and loved it. The location was terrific --- able to walk to most sites (and we're in our sixties) and bus to others after the transit workers strike ended. My recommendation is to just pick an apt that has enough beds (not pull out sofa beds), bath with a shower, and a modest kitchen/cooking area (don't expect much here, just the very basics, no Viking appliances) and is in a location you like. Try for Italian 1st floor (US 2nd floor) if no elevator.
