Rome Apartment Rental Drill Down

Since one of you led me to a perfect rental in the Cinque Terre a few years ago, I'm taking my chances on this crowd's advice again.

2nd trip to Rome (March 2020), this time with college age nieces. The nieces aren't interested in night clubs but I'm sure they would enjoy a late evening cafe stroll independent of Auntie and Uncle. But Auntie and Uncle would prefer that the stroll be nearby the apartment, not a cab ride away. We also want an apartment buffered from late evening noise (so Auntie isn't Grouchy Auntie)

To make the most of our 7 full days and get them to the main attractions I'm leaning towards Trastevere or Centro Storico, but would rather stay on the edge than in the thick of things (avoiding noise & tourist traps). An added plus would be a 2brm/2bath with at least a tiny terrace or garden space.

It seems an impossible list, but I was ready to book a seemingly great place in Trastevere today only to hear back that they're going to stop renting in August of this year.

If you've experienced a rental that has at least some of these attributes I'd love to read about your experience.

Suggest you look at Trilussa Comfort House in Trilussa Piazza near Sisto Bridge. Six of us stayed there for six nights in February and loved the neighborhood. Could be noisy at night but wasn't too bad with windows closed and ear plugs!. Has 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths.

Where are you looking? AirBnB and booking.com have tons of places. Trastevere is great.

We just stayed right next to the Pantheon - 500-ish feet, anyway. Three bedrooms, two baths. 300 eruos per night, booked via HomeAway. Property ID 1706533,

The crew included four young adult children.

It's right in the middle of Rick's "Heart of Rome" area. You can walk to anything. We did.

No patio, but lots of room. To get an apartment with a patio, you'll pay much more.

We are in the middle of a 5 night stay at Mial luxury house thru Rental in Rome. The apartment is 2BR/1 bath but feels large inside. 1 minute walk to Campo di Fiori. Unfortunately, no outside living space, but we are walking everywhere with ease and hang out in the square watching the free entertainment. Below us is a hookah bar that goes well after midnight with music, but every apartment on this trip has been noisy! People are out walking at all hours and they get louder after drinking. Earplugs are easy to pack.

Thanks for your replies. I always pack ear plugs; I think I'll need noise cancelling headphones : ) Time to reset priorities. Did I mention the nieces are 5'9" and 6'2"?

We loved our two-bedroom apartment in Trastevere named Malta Palace. It is near the end of Ponte Sisto on a little piazza. It has 2 bedrooms on different floors; the lower one is huge and doubles as a living area. Each has its own ensuite bathroom ( one with a wonderful rain shower). The bath fixtures and furnishings are very modern and everything is spotless.

There are two rooftop decks, one above the other. We used the lower one for dining as it has a nice table. Only drawback is the kitchen is very small, and there are lots of stairs, as each room is on a different floor. Lorenzo is a great host.

Here is the listing on TripAdvisor, where you can read reviews:

And it’s own website:

I do not remember it being at all noisy late at night, although there is a small restaurant a few doors down. One of the nights we were there we heard music coming from a nearby piazza, and discovered a little dance party/celebration. The band played light rock music for donations, and we had a great time dancing among the locals.

OP... To add to my earlier comment, and respond to yours... Our daughter was the shortest of the young adults at 6'4". The beds are plenty long!

Thanks everyone! Some of your suggested properties were already booked, some indicated too noisy for me, and other property owners weren't willing to commit this far ahead of March 2020.

So, still haven't booked a rental. It was much easier when my DH & I were booking for just the two of us. Now I'm planning for nieces first trip to Rome. My past experiences in Italy, while generally great, are a sticking point. Nearly adjacent to the Duomo in Florence we had an incredibly quiet room. Two blocks from Siena's main piazza was a sleepless nightmare.

The thing about cities, and especially an ancient city like Rome, is that the turn of a corner or the position of the bedrooms can make all the difference in noise. I may go blind reading reviews, but I'm a stickler for homework. I own that.

Just my two cents/rant to property owners: if you have a sleeper sofa in the living room + one bdrm, it's NOT a two bedroom rental. Those kind of listings are a turnoff and time waste.

Hi, last April we stayed in this airbnb property in Rome which we enjoyed very much. It doesn't fit all your needs but it could be worthy to check it out.
Pros:
* Walkable distance to practicly all the most important sights in Rome .
* Super clean
* The proper apartment with a bedroom, bathroom, small kitchen and small living room (sofabed ) is separated by a beautiful attic /terrace from a private bedroom with ensuite bathroom . Nice privacy.
* No noise
* Cute
* Helpful hosts
Cons:
* Super close from Trevi Fountain, but very, very close...steps away. I think you said you didn't want that.
* 5th floor no elevator. Around 70 steps (we , 6 forty and fifty-somethings, didn't have problemswith that. We just were very careful not to forget anything in the apartment once we had left)
* We had a little problem with plumbing that they fixed immediately.

Hope this could be useful, happy planning! ... oh and yes, planning for just two people is so much easier!

@ jean, thank you. I had looked at Charming...but had to reject due to the low ceiling dormers in the twin bed space.

@ Veronica, thanks for the detail and link for the Trevi apt with the amazing covered terrace. Trevi wouldn't be my first pick but that's unique appealing rental. Though your advice to make sure you have everything you need when you leave for the day due to many stairs made me remember a funny story about Niece 1....

About 5 years ago as a high school student she would forget something important a few times a week and would call her mom to run this or that over to the school. Eventually mom said, "I'm not your butler and you need to be more responsible. The next time you forget something, do without it. Don't call me."

The very next day Niece 1 came home from school without laces in her shoes. When her mom asked what happened to the shoe laces, Niece 1 replied, "I forgot to put on a belt this morning so I used my shoe laces to hold up my pants." She's not a flake, she's an absent minded but resourceful mechanical engineer : )

Thank you all for helping with the drill down. I booked Charming Giraud. The tall travelers can have the bed and bath with higher ceilings if they want it. The (reported) quiet but central location, space to spread out a bit and owner attentiveness were the key factors.Oh, and the terrace. Back to attentiveness...when I explained the tall people issue, the owner sent bed measurements within 48 hours. That's a committed property owner/manager.

There will be more questions to come, but with flights and apartment booked and a Scavi office request sent, I'm ready to take a little break from planning. Thanks again for your help.

Lawcath, the 2 bedroom issue (one bedroom and one sofa bed in the living room) might be a translation one. In italian , a bilocale means two rooms (not necessarily bedrooms, just two main spaces), but usually gets translated as 2 bedrooms.
Just so you have a little context . Glad you found an apartment!
