Rome-Apartment or Hotel?

We are going to be in Rome in June for 5 nights (I know not enough time) - and debating between a hotel or apartment in Trastevere area of Rome. Any ideas on places (I have been looking at homeaway.com and they seem to have some great and reasonable places - has anyone used homeaway.com? Suggestions on places to stay?

Hi - my husband and I always book apartments when we travel - We have used homeaway.com for flats in the Prati district of Rome and in several other European cities and have always been pleased with our flats and the overall experience. I find it is always useful to contact the owners directly so you can confirm details etc. -

For 5 nights I think you will be happy to have an apartment. More space, keep some snacks and drinks around, even if you don't really cook. For 4 or more nights we almost always get an apartment.

Homeaway and VRBO are my favorite sources.

Another vote for an apartment. I love having the extra space and somewhere to make meals. I use VRBO for my apartment searches.

Booking.com also lists apartments - you can filter for "apartments" and get hundreds of options.

I just booked through airbnb.com.
I rent apt in Rome, Florence and Venice. I am sure we will be very happy.
It is a lot of cheaper than hotel, so you can use extra money for fun or eating.

I tend more to apartments now if I can as I like being able to spread out. We did 5 nights in Rome twice - you can see a lot in that time! We had a great apartment in 2014 just a block away from the Colosseum (via airbnb). It was nice to be able to go back in the afternoon to take a siesta and cool down. And it was nice to have a kitchen so we could buy breakfast items and snacks, make our own coffee...even prepared supper two nights (and shopping in the grocery stores is fun!).

We did a 4 week trip to Europe and out first stay was Rome. We went with a flat and it was amazing. There are a family of 5 so the extra room and the ability to cook was fantastic. Also, we were nestled in a nice neighborhood 2 mins from transit. We stayed at places all through Italy, Spain and France and found with the right research and the due diligence it was very successful. We used Homeaway.com to book. The filters on the searches worked amazing and the user comments were very helpful.

Good Luck.

My parents and I were in Italy for two weeks in October 2014 - we stayed in Rome 3 nights at the beginning of our trip and two nights at the end. We had much success using booking.com and stayed in two apartments in the same building with the same owner. Apartment vs. hotel depends on why you're there. We were there not to be in Italy, but for Italy to be in us. So the apartment gave us more of a local experience, but that may not be for everyone. We made reservations months in advance and kept our lodging budget tight, which allowed for more spending in other areas. Apartments worked well for us, and we're staying with the same owner when we return to Rome again later this year.
