we're looking for a short-term apartment rental (3 or 4 nights) in Rome for 6 people (2 are kids). Suggestions? Already looked at cross-pollinate.com.
Pauly Frommer's Italy has good apartment broker recommendations. The one she recommended in Florence was more than fair and definitely honest.
Check the library for a copy of her book as I can't find mine with the name of the Rome company (different from the Florence one).
I'm partial to the "by owner" sites actually...I like to be able to communicate with the actual owner and not a middle-man...also...better prices sometimes :-) I'd look at vrbo, holidaylettings (.co.uk), OwnersDirect (.co.uk), HomeAway, etc.
The one I listed is directly with the owner...I like to avoid middle-men also.

I have rented two different apartments from her in the same building in Rome. It is very central, about midway between the Spanish steps and the Fountain of Trevi. She has one large apartment on two levels - as I recall, three bedrooms, two baths, kitchen, balcony, etc. Check it on her web site http://www.yourhomeinrome.net/
The apartment is Michelangelo
You can use my name - Frank Gallo
Go to the graffit wall at http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/graffiti23.html and search on "Mauro" - he is recommended by several - I just booked an apartment through him for 4 nights.
