I highly recommend getting a vaporetto pass for Venice, too, either for however many days you are there or you can be strategic and get a pass for fewer days if bunching your vaporetto trips in those days. Remember to "beep" your pass on the machine before you enter the dock.

In Rome, we just use Google maps on our phones for the buses and, for our group of six that included kids, we found it easier to buy paper bus tickets than to try to use ApplePay. Remember to immediately validate your paper tickets in the validation machine (usually at the back of the bus). Also, the back or middle door of the buses might say exit only, but everybody ignored this, and doing so does get you closer to the validation machine in the back.
