Rome and terrorism

Someone told me that this summer there may be less bag drop availability in some major cities due to terrorist activity. Does that mean it's best to leave any extra luggage in an independent bag drop business? Will places like the train station and airport be ok? Has terrorism been bad lately? Thanks for answering my questions!

Yes terrorism has been pretty bad lately in some major cities in Libya, Syria and Iraq where bombs are detonated in public markets on a regular basis. Some tourists are occasionally beheaded as well. If your travel plans include Baghdad or Benghazi, I suggest to pack a light bullet proof vest and a steel turtle neck (to protect you from the beheading). Not sure about luggage drop in those places.

If your travel plans are limited to Paris or Rome, a vest and a turtle neck is a good idea in winter, but it doesn't have to be in steel, it has to be in style.

I've not heard about plans to close any baggage storage at stations at airports in Europe. They are all manned and you must provide a photo ID to leave your luggage there. But this has been the case for years. If you plan to travel by train however, it is advisable that you pack very light (preferably a carry on size bag and a personal item like a small backpack). This is because carrying heavy luggage up and down the train, and lifting it on the overhead compartment, is a pain.

I am sorry, but this is a lot of terrorism in Rome but it is hard to avoid it. It is called - Vespa and Red Lights.

I am reminded that there has been very little activity from the major terrorist groups in Europe the last few years - the Baader Meinhof gang, IRA, Red Brigades (remember then in Italy?, Weatherunderground, are all pretty quiet.

Thank God.

Stewie has posted this same questions about a dozen times on the TripAdvisor forums. Someone is either reading too much of the wrong thing or is trying to stir things up a little.

If security doesn't stop the terrorists, the pickpockets will.

stewie,

I'd be interested to know which "someone" gave you that information? I'm not sure what kind of "terrorist activity" they might be referring to, or which countries or cities might be affected by that? NO, terrorism has not been bad lately (AFAIK), and I don't have any concerns about travelling in Europe.

Many of the Deposito Bagagli facilities in Italy are operated by private businesses and as I recall it's been that way for a while. There are sometimes sizable queues so that wouldn't be an attractive option for me. I haven't really noticed what type of facilities are available in other countries.

It would help if you could elaborate on situations where you expect to be leaving luggage. You may not have to use facilities of that type too often.
