Rome and Taxis

So when we arrive we have a pretty full day our first day. This is because my son wants to see the Domus Aurea and it is only open on the weekends and we will only be in Rome on a Sunday. So we are set to land at 9am on Sunday. We have already arranged with the hotel to have a pickup to make things a little easier. We are to be at the DA between 12:30-1:00 to pick up our tickets for the 1:30 time (Had I thought I would have done print from home :( ) Then we are doing a food tour that evening starting at 6pm.

I am thinking that we should use a taxi to get us where we need to go on Sunday, because we will be tired anyway. Do they have reliable taxi service? Uber? Lyft? What are the thoughts on transportation the first day.
And FYI...the food tour and DA tickets are already paid so non-refundable.

They are reliable but watch out for people posing as official taxi.
The official taxis are generally honest, but just in case be prepared so that you don’t get swindled. A trip within the city center should never be more than 15€

That is for sure something I read about. I did download the ap mytaxi that Rick Steves had in his book.

No Lyft and no Uber in Italy. Only Uber Black in Milan and Rome, but you don't need to pay a fee to a digital middle-man if you want a cab or private driver.

Ask the hotel's staff to call for a cab that accepts credit cards making clear that if the credit card machine is "broken" you are not going to pay. This way you'll solve the problem with Roman taxi drivers at its source, the (few) dishonest ones won't take your call.

ps The "no tips" rule includes taxi drivers.

Thank you We are staying at a hotel and I agree that it will be best to let them call our taxi for us to leave. Thanks everyone for the advice. We are only 1 month and 22 days away!

Thanks Roberto for the taxi link. What are people's experience between taxis and private transfer from FCO to Rome hotel near Piazza Navona? I realize the OP said they have already arranged transport thru their hotel and their question is about taxis once they are in Rome on such a tight timeframe, but this may be a question others want to ask.

Horsewoofie,

Have used Rome Cabs numerous times, have always been pleased, and will use them again. After a long flight, being tired, suffering jet lag, and being on unfamiliar turf, nothing beats a private driver to get you to the hotel.

We used taxis a few times while in Rome. From the airport go to an official taxi stand. Only get in a white taxi. 48 euros to the city. While in the city your hotel can call a taxi or only go to the taxi stands and only get in a white taxi.

We always asked up front what would be the approx cost before getting in. We would show the address on our phone so they could read it. We often paid less than what they estimated. Never more.

Going from one hotel to another my husband left a backpack in the cab with his medication & phone in it. I know very bad mistake. The cabbie did return the following day with everything in it to our hotel. We had the two hotels calling looking for it and were very stressed for a day but all ended well.

Overall we had no bad experiences in the six times we took a cab in the city.
