My husband and I are traveling to Rome in September with his work, so travel is covered. While we are in Europe we want to tack on our own part of a getaway to the trip after his work - we are from DC and have three small kids at home so probably can only add an extra 3-4 days. We recently did a trip to Florence, Tuscany, and down the Amalfi Coast so don’t feel the need to stay in Italy. We’ve both done Paris as children but it has been decades, so it’s the leading thought. Any other suggestions for a good getaway that’s relatively convenient from Rome and to get back to DC and enjoy a nice add on to the trip? Open to any must do’s in Rome as well! Thanks!
A lot depends on your interests and what you like to see and do. If you give a hint, it’s easier to recommend something. How about visiting one of the islands - Sardinia, Sicily, Corsica? So many “must dos” in Rome - Colosseum, Forum, Borghese Gallery, Vatican City, Ostia Antica for starters.
What a wonderful getaway!
I am always a fan of different "flavors" on a trip. Paris is always a good idea and romantic, and Amsterdam comes to mind as somewhere fun and unique, and both have nonstops to D.C. However, that would make the trip totally in high energy locations.
Are you looking for somewhere calm and relaxing, or is the easy nonstop back home more compelling? Enjoy!
if you can fly into Rome but home from another port, and you have 3 or 4 nights, I'd probably do Amsterdam. If you have to come back to Rome to fly home (you won't if you can book this yourself but with a business trip it is possible it is already booked for you) then consider Sicily. Another obvious option would be Barcelona -- we did a 5 day side trip here years ago after taking our adult kids to Rome for a couple of weeks. We flew back into FCO the night before the return and stayed at the airport Hilton and took the tram into Trastevere for dinner that evening.
If you have to fly back from Rome, have you considered Venice? One of the most unique places in Italy and you can get there and back with a quick, short plane / train ride.
I would suggest Venice as it’s quick and easy by train. If you stay in the area near the train station, you will be able to get a bus or taxi to the airport quite easily for your flight home.
