Rome and Southern Italy 2014

Greetings all, Beginning planning for another Italy trip next fall. Our last trip was to the north (CT, Siena, Florence, Venice). I was in Rome in '98 but my wife has not been. We would like to have fewer travel days this time, so thinking a week in Rome and a week based further south (Sorrento perhaps) and have some day trips (Paestum, Trail of the Gods, Capri) in there. South of Rome is all new to me, so advice on what to see (and not to see), along with nice scenic towns near good transport is greatly appreciated. We're not afraid to get off the beaten path.

The best places, or most popular, destinations in South Italy are the Gulf of Naples area (Naples, Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri and Ischia, Amalfi coast etc), Apulia (Gargano Peninsula, Salento, and Matera in nearby Basilicata) and of course the superstar Sicily, consistently voted by Italians as the most beautiful region. If you decide on Sicily, however, be wary that it is far, it is big and there is a lot to see, therefore I suggest flying there from Rome and stay there at least 8-9 days (just to get a taste of it).
