Rome and South - Late December 2011 and Early January 2012..

We would like to take my son (21) to Italy for his vacation after Christmas this year for 3 weeks. There will be four of us. We have been to Italy, Rome and North previous. How cold will it get? Where should we visit. We would like to visit Rome (3-nights - have done this before), Naples (3-4 nights, never been there), Sciliy (Palmero maybe 2-3 nights, never been there) and any other suggestions. Is the ferry running from Palmero over to one one African country that time of year? Any other suggestions, I am concerned that it could be to cold to enjoy ourselves.

You best bet is to check on weather sites for the mean temperatures during that time. Very hard if not impossible to predict if it would be "too cold." Rome is about the same latitude as New York/Boston so daylight hours would be about the same. We were in Germany over Christmas and it was cold but did not prevent us from having a good time as we planned for it to be cold.

Today Rome was 48 degrees Fahrenheit. I saw a range of low 40's to 60 or so in December. (Checked becasue we are spending Christmas 2011 there.) There is a trip planner weather site at http://www.wunderground.com/history/ that I have found useful. Of course if we could truly predict the weather, well, what fun would that be? :-)

We just spent the same time frame in the south (Apuglia & Calabria) and in Sicily (Catania area). For the most part the weather was fine. Long sleeve/light coat worked fine. A few times where a t shirt was comfortable. I think on average it was 14/15 degrees C. Palermo is a really great place. Lots of things to see.
