Rome and south in November December

We are planning a trip to Italy from November 26 thru Dec 5. We want to spend time in Rome and possibily along the Amalfi Coast. We have an anniversary on Nov 30. Would you suggest starting in Rome and then drive south? Is parking a car difficult in the small coastal towns? ANY recommendations for our anniversary? We've been to Rome before. We like off the beaten path. Might try to work in a visit to Bagnoli del Trignio. What do you suggest for an itinerary?

Have you read Rick Steves' Europe Through the Back Door? It's "off the beaten path" like only Rick Steves knows how! I'm looking at mine from 2006, and he suggests the area up are asking about as a good place to go.
Rick says give the Naples/Amalfi Coast area at least 3 days..."the real Amalfi thrill is the scenic drive". I have to agree! Keep going beyond Naples to Sorrento (this is where I would stay) and Positano. You can even go to Capri from here. Or Pompeii. Or Vesuvius.
I have driven in Rome, and I wouldn't recommend it. Pick up the car when you are leaving Rome!

One more thing....since you are going "off season" you will not have the crowds but you may find a Christmas market in the cities. I was in Rome and Verona in Dec 2013 (but it was around the 14th) and it was wonderful!

I assume you're not even thinking about having the car while you're in Rome.
Check the weather forecasts so you bring the right clothing for that time of year.

Does the ten days include your travel days?

I would fly into Naples, take the Curreri Viaggi bus to Sorrento and if you "need" a car,
rent it here. Parking at this time of year should be no problem. Car Parks will not be busy.

Just make sure your lodging has parking.

The drive from Sorrento to Bagnoli del Trigno is about 2 1/2 hrs. Spend a nite then head to
Rome.. 3 hours. Drop your car BEFORE you hit the city and train in.

Fly out of Rome.
