Rome and Naples in early November? Go or no go?

Early November is the only time my travel companion and I can get away from work. We have 7 nights and would like to go to Rome, Amalfi coast, and Naples. Is this foolish idea? Should we choose another destination? We are both experienced travelers.

My favorite time of year to visit Italy! I just think that you’re trying to do too much in 7 days. Depending on your interests (museums vs. scenery, city vs. sea coast) I would choose Rome and either Naples or Amalfi.

We were in that area the same time of year. It can depend a lot on luck, or lack there of, but overall, our weather was great. Rome was glorious, about 70 and sunny every day. Pompeii actually was a bit hot with no shade and about 80. Sorrento/Amalfi was pretty good. We were disappointed to get rain when we went to Amalfi city and Ravello. It is a rainy time of year in Italy, I believe. We stayed in Sorrento and our favorite restaurant and some others seemed to be closing for a break until Christmas.

We travel pretty fast, ourselves, but that would be way to fast for us. I'd drop Amalfi since the weather may not be ideal. Also, the ferries between the cities were not running. Maybe 4-5 nights for Rome, 2-3 for Naples?

There is no substitute for Pompeii. But NC has better beaches than most of Italy. (Italy has better beach food, to be sure!) Some seasonal businesses on the AC will be closed. Try to download a revised seasonal bus and ferry schedule, but they can be hard to find. Rome is a major city, and technically good for 7 days by itself. You cannot wake up on the Amalfi Coast (or even in Sorrento) and fly home from Rome the very same day.

There is nothing wrong with the AC, but I consider Venice a higher priority destination. If you don't care for art at all, maybe not for you.

I've been to all three destinations (9 nights Rome, 2 Naples, 5 Amalfi Coast). At that time of year I'd definitely skip Amalfi and either split the time between Rome and Naples OR just stay in Rome the whole time with a day trip to Ostia Antica. I haven't been to Ostia Antica but many on the forum recommend that day trip.

As others have said, in November, the Amalfi Coast will be largely shut down. Additionally, if you get bad weather there, you’ll have very little to do.
You could do all 7 days in Rome, with, perhaps, a day trip or 2. Or you could take a fast train to Venice for a couple of days. In that case, it would be smart to look into “open jaw” tickets, aka multi-city, thereby saving yourselves one flight.

Not foolish at all. Just be aware that end of October/early November is the rainiest time of the year in Italy, therefore there is an above average chance that you might need to be ready to carry around a portable umbrella and maybe a light rain jacket (it's not cold at that time of the year yet, so no need for heavy coats).

Since the weather may be iffy at that time, the Amalfi coast may not be as enjoyable on a rainy day, so you need to be ready for plan changes in the weather does not cooperate. Naples however offers a plethora of places to see even on a rainy day, like the Archeological Museum (a.k.a. with the acronym MANN, Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli). Pompeii is also enjoyable even with light rain (cooler and less crowded, the best of my visits at Pompeii was on a rainy day).

Be aware that you should spend your last 4 nights in Rome to fully enjoy at least the highlights of the eternal city. So go to Naples by train upon landing (just over one hour by train from Rome Termini station), and spend your first 3 nights there. Then you come back to Rome for the last 4 nights before coming home.

Hi Carol,
My wife and I were there late October last year. Weather was fine. Warm in Rome, cooler along the coast. Couple of passing showers but even when it’s raining in Rome at least you’re still in Rome. Enjoy.

We are going this November and based on other people's comments, and the weather, we decided on Rome and Naples. Naples gives us options for inside activities if the weather is cold or rainy where the Amalfi Coast didn't have much if the weather isn't nice. We're doing 4 nights in Naples with 1 day Naples, 1 day Pompeii, and 1 day Paestum before heading to Rome for a week.
