Rome and Florence with a child

My wife and I are going to Rome and Florence in June with our nine year old son, and I am a little worried about safety. It will be the first international trip for us. After reading the theft threads I am somewhat paranoid about pickpockets, but should I worry more about that with our attention being on our son as well?

Don't worry. Just use a money belt for your money and credit cards, wear your bag across your body, if you have a DSLR wear it across your body and just be aware of your surroundings. Italians love kids so you don't have to worry too much. Just be attentive to where you are and who's around you. No one will bother your son though the street sellers might try to entice him to buy their junk toys. Just let him know this may happen and all he has to do is say "no thank you". I took my daughter to Italy with me when she had just turned 10. We had no problems at all as I had explained some of the things we may encounter. I didn't scare her with many details, just that people may try to get her to buy junkie things and for her to stay close to us in crowded areas. She was fine and had a blast. Donna

Great. Thanks for the advice . I will be sure to prep him as you suggested. I'm sure it will be a great trip, but I worry as all parents do. I feel better hearing about your experience.
