Rome and Florence day trip suggestions?

Hubby and I taking very last minute trip to Italy…leaving Monday!

We have 5 full days in Rome. I have 3 touring days of the city that include private Vatican City and private Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine hill tours. Also an evening food tour.

One day private full day to Pompeii and Amalfi coast.

Wondering if I should spend the other full day in the city, or day trip to Hadrian’s Villa or Orvieto??

For Florence, we have 5 3/4 days (first morning train from Rome)

3 days Florence city
2 days: 1 private full day Chianti Classico and 1 full day Brunello Montalcino
Each tour includes some hill towns

Would you spend a 4th day in the city? Or day trip to Assisi or day trip to cinque terre?

OR half day to Pisa and afternoon in city?

Or

Wing it? and eat drink and be merry?

I’ve been to Italy twice and to all these places, my husband has never been. We also will surely be back and don’t want to run ragged.

Thank you for any advice!

I can’t believe we are going!!

I forgot to mention we also have a final 1/2 day and full night in Rome center before flying the next day.

So you have one unplanned Rome day and one unplanned Florence day. The rest of your days seem very tightly scheduled, with a couple looking potentially quite tiring . I would be tempted to leave these days blank for now. You may find you need a "down day". Or weather may require a rescheduling. For me, having a day to relax and perhaps see some of the less popular sites in these great cities beats sitting on a train for hours just to spend a short time in another town. This is where having a B list of things you'd like to do, rather than the A list of must dos comes in handy.

If you find you want an extra day trip instead of further exploring the cities, then they can easily be done on the spur of the moment. Pisa/Lucca is easy from Florence. CT, especially with summer crowds, is not something I would recommend as a day trip. Assisi seems awfully far for a day trip to me.

Fiesole would be an easy, spontaneous day trip from Florence - you could take the #7 bus from alongside the Museo San Marco.

Three days in Rome is barely scratching the surface. The trip to Pompeii and the Amalfi coast will be spent mostly in a vehicle if using a private driver. It will be a very long day due to the distances and road conditions. You have a very tight schedule. CT is too far from Florence for any effective day trip. There is some merit for having a free afternoon just to sit in a sidewalk cafe. You may not want to run ragged but you have set a schedule that almost guarantee that you will. If you are in Rome over a weekend, it is shame not to see the Appian Way on a Sunday. I would worry about filling your extra day when you are on-site. You are headed into a very hot time, high humidity, and you may find it hard to maintain your proposed schedule.

You can take a direct train from the Roma Termini station to Orvieto (1h 30m). However, I recommend spending three nights in Orvieto and taking a bus to Civita for the day (1h).
Assisi is best via Rome as a day trip not Florence taking 2h 15m. From Florence it’s 2h 45m.
The Cinque Terre is too far from Florence. Another option is to take a direct train between Assisi and Florence / Rome i.e., depart from one location and into another and spend a night or two in Assisi.
Pisa is another day trip option from Florence taking 1h and the train is direct.
I see Inbsig suggested Fiesole that is a scenic bus ride near Florence, but I don’t agree that it makes a good day trip. I was ready to leave shortly after I arrived.

One day private full day to Pompeii and Amalfi coast.

At the very least that is 7 hrs in the car. Once you have done the travel, less than 3 hrs at Pompeii is in my view kind of pointless.

You might get hungry and need to stop and eat, at least once, and if you want to do more than just 'drive' the Amalfi coast road you look to have a gruelingly long day. That 'extra' day on Rome could very well be spent in recovery.
The weather forecast for the next week is temps in the 90sF. Shade at Pompeii is scarce.

Can you plan the evening dinner tour the day after the Amalfi dash? Give yourself an unstructured morning to recuperate?

Our favorite day trip from Rome is Tivoli Gardens( and fountains.) It is not a long trip there and a beautiful and unique experience. Highly recommended.

I would not leave Florence for more day trips. Enjoy being in this beautiful city.Wing it! See how you feel after all those tours. Then, if you still want to go someplace, the CT is closer than other options. Assisi is a gem.

Since your husband has never been I would just give him a rest and let him enjoy wondering around Florence. Since your going in the Summer you will have the advantage of long nights. You don't have to have anything planned, head on up to Piazalle Michelangelo for the views and some photos, grab lunch at the Mercado Centrale, head over to Pitti Palace and stroll in Boboli Gardens (this may require a reservation?). And walk everywhere, stop at a cafe for a spritz and people watch. My husband would kill me if I had something planned everyday. We usually do a planned day, no plan day and switch back and forth depending on our time or just one thing a day and the rest of the time to just go where the day takes us!
