We are visiting Rome in June for a week and would like to rent a house in a nice beach town 3 to 4 hours from room and accessible by public transport. Any ideas?
I enjoyed Levanto north of the Cinque Terri. Lovely beach for swimming and great little town to wander around, have a nice dinner .....
I stayed in a nice little family owned hotel in the center of town.
Viareggio (serviced by train) is a popular Art Deco beach town on the Tuscan Mediterranean coast.
Santa Marinella has a beautiful beach just an hour from Rome.
Cute town, wonderful seafood.
Anzio would be another option but a bit further.
Up the coast in Tuscany , look at Viareggio. 21/2-3 hours from Rome.
Everything suggested above is all too predictable. All usual suspects well known to the North American audience. In reality, close to Rome, there is something much more spectacular.
Check below, or Google the word: "Ponza".
It's an island off the Latium coast.

I have been researching Sperlonga as a possible first stop after arriving in Rome from the US. It looks lovely and 1 hour by train from Rome, midway between Rome and Naples. It has been used many times as a movie location.
