Rome and Amalfi Coast

We are planning to go to Italy 7/21/24-8/2/24

We were thinking Rome until 7/24 then booked a train to Naples then a ferry to Amalfi. Thinking of staying in Amalfi until 7/31 then 2 days in Naples before flying out

But we are so lost and stressed! Is that too much time on the AC? Should we stay in one destination in one of the cities in Amalfi (found a hotel in Amalfi but haven’t booked it) or pick diff hotels in diff areas in AC. Which tours are worth booking and what can we just do on our own without breaking the bank? Places that help you with Itin are tours are minimum $6k per person which is a lot! We are a family of 4 (2 adults 2 teens).

Welcome to the forum!

Do you have a good guide book?
RS Italy guide will cover all your locations
You can buy it on Amazon, make sure you get most recent edition

Scroll thru this forum as there are many many threads about visiting the Amalfi Coast

I’d stay in Rome a bit longer
3 nights only gives you 2.5 days there and that half day if jet lagged

Then take a train to Salerno ( not Naples, that would involve more transportation to get to AC) direct fast and hop on the ferry to Amalfi ( town)
If you’ve found lodgings in Amalfi you should book ASAP
A week might be a bit long-maybe cut it by a day and head to Naples for 3 nights

From Amalfi you can visit Positano, Ravello, Capri, Atrani etc by bus, ferry or foot
Plenty to do
No need for organized tours
Then go back to Salerno and take train to Naples
From Naples visit Pompeii

Be prepared for wicked heat and crowds

ETA
it looks like you’ve got 11 nights IN Italy
I’d allot nights like this
Rome 4
Amalfi 4
Naples 3 ( with day trip to Pompeii)

Meanwhile here is some reading material

I agree with the poster above that a day or two more in Rome would be desirable. I would also advise an over night in Capri. By the time you get there, and return (the last ferry back to Amalfi leaves pretty early), your visit is a short one.

Don’t miss Ravello. The views of the coast are heart-stoppingly gorgeous.
We found a tour from Sorrento that included Salerno and Paestum. We thought it was very worthwhile and not too expensive. I think the problem with costs is that so many tours are aimed at cruisers. If you keep searching, you may find much more reasonably priced options. Imo, even if $6k/pp includes plans for a whole week, it sounds outlandishly expensive.
Buon viaggio.

So between Amalfi, Ravello and Capri and Positano should I plan to stay a night in each? Seems like Capri is worth the overnight, I heard Positano can just be a day trip. What about Ravello? Should we consider staying there?

3 nights Amalfi hotel
1 night Ravello hotel
1 night Capri
2 nights Naples?

Too many one night stays- exhausting and not necessary.

Amalfi 3-4 nights - day trip Ravello and Positano
Capri 1-2 nights- this can also be just a day trip- we were happy with that
Naples 2 nights (3 nights- if you are planning to visit Pompeii on one day from Naples) you could also day trip Capri from here instead of from Amalfi- it is closer to Naples

Positano is worth just a few hours

2 night stay means 1.5 days for sightseeing
Each location change eats up a half a day at laest
Packing up, checking out, getting there, checking in, unpacking, getting oriented all takes time

Travel on the AC is chaotic, inefficient and slow. Limit how much you plan to move about each day
