Rome - Amalfi one day trip

Looking for recommendation for a one day trip from Rome Termini to Amalfi Coast (Positano - Amalfi) by train.
Not sure about the best quickest way to get there and be able to return the same day.
Napoli or Salerno? Then water taxi or the bus?

Tks

That is a long way to go for a day trip. Suggest planning a trip to visit the Naples, Capri, Sorrento, Amalfi Coast and Pompeii and spend 3-4 days there.

Not impossible, but a long day.

From mid-May to the end of September, I would say no way. The A.C. at that time is high season & human gridlock. You would regret it.

From November to early March, I would say nope as well. Amalfi & Positano are closed down for the most part. Sorrento--not technically on the A.C. but on the peninsula stays open year round.

So that leaves October and then from mid-March to early May as prime times to make this l-o-n-g daytrip. You would have to catch a train no later than 8AM at Roma Termini station to not Naples but Salerno (a 90 minute train ride), at which point you can take a SITA bus (or ferry if it's running, better check) to either Amalfi or Positano. You'd have to be back to Salerno Centrale station by 5:00 PM to get back to Rome before 7:00.

Like I say, doable but with caveats. Enjoy your planning!

Thanks for the information. Just what I thought, a super long day. We are heading to Italy tomorrow and this was a last minute twist to the adventure...we shall see. I have being in the area before but staying in Praiano for few days.

Not just a long day - you would be burning a lot of your limited time in transit, for just a short time actually being where you had hoped to go. In fact, you would spend more time just getting there and getting back than you would have time actually there (maybe 2X) - something like 8+ hours in transit and just 4 or 5 hours there. Really not a good use of your time - especially given what else you could do with all that time. Remember - you're not trading 8 hours sitting at home for 4 hours in Positano...you're trading 8 hours in Rome that you could spend taking advantage of all that's available there. Couldn't you find a betted use for those 8+ hours? I could.

Personally, I'd save Positano for another trip. Having 8 more hours in Rome is not such a bad alternative.
