Rome, Amalfi Coast, Naples in July

Hi! Four of us are planning 7 days in Italy this summer (end of July). We are flying into Rome, then making our way to the Amalfi Coast with stops in Naples and Pompeii. Here are our questions: 1. We were initially thinking of renting a car from Rome and driving to the coast but after briefly going through some comments about the Amalfi in July, we are having second thoughts. What is the best way to get from Rome to Sorrento? 2. Any recommendations for nice apartments for rent in Sorrento? 3. Any recommendations for a vehicle and driver for hire? Around how much does it cost per day? 4. From the Amalfi Coast, we plan to go to Naples then take the train from there and make our way to London, with stops at Florence, Lucerne and Paris (over 6 days). What railpasses should we get? Thanks!

Alexandria. Just a few notes for you.
Very nice Train from Rome to Naples. But from Naples to Sorrento you have to switch to a local train that has many stops all the way to Sorrento. If you are carrying bags this will not be pretty. The local Train is more like an above ground subway. Since we had bags we hired a service to pick us up Naples and take us to Sorrento. Charge was 80 EU one way. Company was Almalfi Coast Drivers Renato Cuomo www.amalficoastdrivers.com . From Sorrento we did take the local train back up to Pompeii and back. Very simple and easy (without baggage). We also had Renato take us one way to Positano and took the Ferry back to Sorrento Rick

We were in Italy April 2012. We took the fast train from Rome to Naples. We used www.sorrentosilverstar.com/ wonderful car service. The drivers were fabulous, service excellent. Picked us up at train station and drove to the apartment we rented on the coast. Also used them for a day trip to Very enjoyable, friendly and knowledgeable.

Thanks for your quick replies. Appreciate it! Has anyone ever done any hang gliding around the coast? Please let me know.

There are numerous self catering options in Sorrento ranging from apartments to suites with cooking facilities. Here are some in, or near, the centre of Sorrento http://www.villaelisasorrento.com/english/index.htm http://www.lapiazzettasorrento.com/en/ http://www.rotasuites.com/en/home.php http://www.coltursuites.com/en/ http://www.magihouse.com/ You have left it a bit late to book accom, it is the height of the season, and most of the good places will be booked or will have a minimum stay requirement. Perhaps widen your search to B&B hotels as well? You could use booking sites eg Venere.com or Booking.com to check what is available at that time.
